The Birchwood Cafe is a pioneer in the Twin Cities farm to table movement.

We are a community conscious neighborhood cafe that has called the Seward neighborhood home for 25 years. Through our strong relationships with our farmers, we specialize in sustainable, organic, and locally-grown ingredients to make our Good Real Food. Our menu highlights and celebrates the bounty throughout the different growing seasons.

This past year has challenged our industry and service model immensely. We are looking for a Sous Chef that brings a high level of integrity, commitment and care to their daily work. Key Components of the job:

-Training and coaching cooks
-Execution of food preparation for restaurant service, catering, and special orders
-Collaboration + communication within the Executive Chef
-Growth + development of cooks
-Menu design + recipe development
-Systems development + implementation

This will be a salary position and one that will allow for a healthy work + life balance. Wages are contingent upon performance and experience. We believe that all employees deserve reliable, fair pay and that all roles are valued as integral parts of our greater whole. Instead of a traditional tipping structure, where the majority of tips go to service staff, a 18% Fair Wage Share service charge is added to all guest checks and used to pay for higher hourly wages and increased benefits for all staff.

Essential Qualifications

- Leadership experience within a professional kitchen
- Concise and clear communication skills
- Deep knowledge of culinary fundamentals + techniques
- Positive attitude and ability to inspire it in others
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to organize, prioritize and delegate
- Self-starter with the ability to motivate others
- Flexible schedule + weekend availability
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to bend and lift loads up to 50 lbs.
- Above all, strong values for community, teamwork, and collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

-Passion for supporting local, farmers and sustainable agriculture practices
-Food truck and event experience
-Spanish proficiency

The Sous Chef is a full-time position. This position is directly supported by and accountable to the Executive Chef and the Birchwood Cafe’s Leadership Team.
